Dr Amanda Roberts, the founder of Wheels of Wellness, describes the reasons and the need for this program.
The Wheels of Wellness (WOW) Outreach Mobile currently runs a medical clinic from the boot of a car, hindered by the weather, lack of space and only allows us to see one client at a time, without any privacy. At night we have no light or protection from rain and mosquitos, and no electricity or running water.
Wheels of Wellness program is engaging, supporting and delivering health care to our forgotten members of society, people disadvantaged by domestic abuse, homelessness, poverty, mental health problems and more.
Cairns has a high proportion of people living on the streets who need medical and social assistance. We help our clients achieve better health outcomes as they attempt to get their lives back on track. WOW works hard to engage disadvantaged clients in a respectful and positive manner.
We would love to purchase a van in which we can run our medical clinics. This will allow us to offer a comfortable space off the street for our clients, private examinations and counseling. The total cost for the van is about $50,000 and to convert into a medical clinic will cost at least $20,000-40,000.
WOW is funded by donations and grants, we would appreciate any financial support you can give us. No donation is too small. We would love to purchase a van before the rainy season hits Cairns.
